More than just a scalp rub

Most people think Indian head massage is all about the scalp. They’re not wrong, but they’re missing the best bits. This traditional therapy works on your head, face, neck, shoulders and upper arms — the areas where stress likes to set up camp and unpack its suitcase. It’s not just a pampering treat (although it definitely feels like one). It’s a therapeutic, grounding treatment that can calm your mind, loosen tight muscles and leave you walking out feeling lighter.

What happens in a session

You’ll stay fully clothed and either sit in a comfortable chair or lie on my treatment couch. Using a combination of massage techniques, I work through the areas that tend to hold the most tension: your neck and shoulders from too much screen time, your scalp from all that overthinking, and your face from unconsciously clenching every time your inbox pings. The movements are soothing but purposeful — think of it as coaxing your muscles to let go rather than forcing them.

Why it’s so effective

Indian head massage isn’t just about muscle relief. It stimulates blood flow, promotes lymphatic drainage, and encourages your body to activate its own healing responses. People often find it helps with:

  • Reducing headaches and migraines
  • Relieving neck and shoulder tension
  • Improving sleep
  • Reducing anxiety and stress
  • Easing eye strain
  • Boosting circulation for healthier skin and hair

You might also find your mood lifts and your mind feels clearer — like you’ve pressed a little reset button for your whole upper body.

The afterglow

Clients often describe feeling deeply relaxed but also refreshed and energised afterwards. You may notice you sleep more deeply, feel less irritable, or even realise that annoying knot in your shoulder has finally given up.

If you’re looking for a simple, effective way to unwind and release tension from head to shoulders, Indian head massage is a lovely place to start.
